THE APPLICATION PERIOD FOR THE 2015-2016 ROGER REES AWARDS IS CLOSED. CHECK BACK FOR 2016-2017 ANNOUNCEMENT.
The Broadway Education Alliance (BEA), producer of the annual Roger Rees Awards, the Greater New York metro area annual celebration of excellence in high school performance in musical theater, has announced a new nomination process to select students eligible to compete for the title of Best Actor and Best Actress for the 2015-2016 academic year.
High schools located in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Westchester, and Long Island, must now register the school production with the Broadway Education Alliance by December 18, 2015. To be eligible to participate in the program, schools must be presenting a licensed production that begins performances before May 14, 2016.
BEA’s Award Advisory Board, made up of experienced Broadway leaders, will select no more that 25 productions out of the total number of schools registered. In accordance with the nomination guidelines established by the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, a team of 2-3 industry professionals will adjudicate the performances of students performing eligible roles in the selected productions.
Based on the results of this process, forty students (20 females and 20 males) will be nominated to participate in the 6th annual Gershwin Awards that will be held in New York City (at a location to be announced) on Sunday, May 22, 2016.
This day-long musical event includes voice and movement rehearsal lead by a Broadway choreographer and musical director that culminates in an ensemble presentation and a showcase of solo performances of a song each student performed in their school musical.
A panel of industry experts will select the Best Actor and Best Actress of the Greater New York metro area. These two students will represent the New York City region at the 8th National High School Musical Theatre Awards, a national celebration of outstanding achievement in musical theatre performance, which will be held on Monday, June 26, at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.
