This year's Gershwin Awards occurred on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Students from around the New York City Metro Area arrived at Collaborative Arts Project 21 for a day of workshops, rehearsals and one-on-one evaluations. The group learned and performed a medley performance as well as solo selections which showcased the role for which they were nominated. Then, each one was interviewed and evaluated by Broadway professionals David Chase (Judge, Musical Supervisor of Nice Work If You Can Get It), Eliza Ventura (Judge, Artistic Director of Cap21) and Cesar Rocha (Judge, Telsey and Company), who comprised this year's judging panels.
This year's awards went to Javan Zapata (Winner, Up and Comer Award), Kyra Leeds (Winner, Best Actress) and Joshua Schwartz (Winner, Best Actor). Joshua and Kyra will go on to represent their schools, the Gershwin Awards and the New York City area at this yea'rs National High School Musical Theater Awards on June 25.
