Kevin participated as a finalist in the New York City Gershwin Awards which recognizes excellence in high school musical theatre performance in the New York City Area. As the male winner of the competition, Kevin went on to compete in the 2011 National High School Musical Theatre Awards (or the Jimmy Awards) which is a program that allows the best performances by high school students around the country. The program is a week long and involves private coaching as well as group rehearsals which culminates in a production on the Minskoff Theatre stage! (visit NHSMTA.com)

After winning the "most improved" award at the Jimmy Awards, Kevin went on to his first year as a student at Marist College, however, his first year was spent in Florence, Italy studying Fashion Design. Below, he talks about his experiences and the opportunities the Gershwin Awards afforded him:

“I LOVED being a part of Camp Broadway and I miss you guys! The Jimmy Awards were amazing and performing on Broadway was absolutely brilliant! Currently I am a freshman at Marist College and I am studying my first two semesters in Florence, Italy!!! My major is Fashion Design and I can’t wait to use the skills that theatre has taught me to apply them to the Fashion world!”

The two winners of the Gershwin Awards will go on to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (affectionately referred to as "the Jimmy's"). This week-long program puts together some of the most talented high school students who were nominated as best actor or best actress in their high school musical. After competing in regional programs, the winners come to New York for a week of intensive training and rehearsals in singing, dancing and acting. A final performance is put together and presented on the stage of the Minskoff Theatre! The week also includes solo coaching, talk-backs with Broadway performers, auditions for talent agents, and an outing to a Broadway show. Two winners are eventually selected by a panel of Broadway Professionals. Take a look at last year's Jimmy's highlight reel, below!
